Location: The Throwing Room, 29 Rosella St, Doncaster East
For Experienced Potters Only: This workshop is designed for experienced potters ready to take on the challenge of creating larger and wider forms.
Join expert ceramicist Linda DeToma for a full-day workshop dedicated to mastering the art of throwing large plates and platters. Whether you’re looking to refine your technique or explore new forms, this hands-on experience is your chance to elevate your skills.
What You’ll Learn:
- Throwing Large Platters: Linda will demonstrate how to throw large-scale pieces, offering guidance on achieving various forms and sizes while sharing invaluable tips and tricks for working with larger volumes of clay. You’ll then have the opportunity to throw multiple platters with Linda’s personal feedback and assistance. We’ll also discuss handbuilt platter too.
- Finishing Your Work: Linda will cover how to trim large platters effectively on the wheel. Your pieces can then be trimmed at a later date once leather-hard.
What to Bring:
- Clay Details *updated*: At least 20kg of clay
Recommended clay is Keane’s Stoneware 33 or similar (a plain white clay can work as well, but may require extra care to prevent slumping). We will have Stoneware 33 available to purchase on the day if needed.
OR
A groggy clay (e.g., Raku T or White Raku) for extra stability when throwing large pieces. However if your clay has some grog content please make sure to soften it at least 1 week in advance. See below details to soften your clay. - Notebook and pen
- Apron and pottery toolkit
- A small plate of food to share for lunch
How to soften your clay:
- At least a week before the workshop, slice your clay into 10+ layers, add a small amount of water between each layer, and re-stack.
- Seal the clay in its bag and leave it for a few days.
- A couple of days before the session, wedge the clay thoroughly to ensure it is well-combined and ready to work with.
This workshop is a fantastic opportunity to build confidence and refine your skills with larger and wider forms under Linda’s expert guidance. Spaces are limited—secure your spot today!
